There's something special about our October Featured Jam maker, Girl Meets Dirt. Every detail of their handmade products, from the fruit-forward flavor of their jams and shrubs, to the beautiful packaging, is a reminder of the care and dedication with which their products were made. Taking no shortcuts, Girl Meets Dirt makes every batch slowly in a copper pot with fruit, a little sugar, and a lot of patience.

Based in the San Juan Islands at the northwest corner of Washington State, Girl Meets Dirt was founded in 2013 after Audra Lawlor ("girl") left a career on Wall Street for a farmette down a one lane road on Orcas Island ("dirt"). Audra and her team see the foods they make as tangible ways to celebrate a human connection to the land and the beautiful fruit it produces.

Girl Meets Dirt makes Okanogan Apricot Spoon Preserves, this month’s featured jam, with apricots grown inland by Smallwood Farms, a fourth-generation family farm in the Okanogan Valley. Made in the traditional French confiture style, the jam offers an incredibly silky texture and intense apricot flavor. The perfect amounts of unrefined sugar and lemon juice create balance, and apricot kernels (painstakingly harvested from the pit of each apricot by the Girl Meets Dirt team) are gathered in a sachet and cooked in the pot to infuse the jam with a slight almond flavor. Spooned over warm oatmeal, this jam is pure Pacific Northwest magic.
